  1. A runaway slave had little chance of survival. They were more successful when they plotted to escape as a group. Maroon communities were established in Jamaica, Haiti, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba. Some lasted for over a hundred years, and the largest was Palmares, in Brazil, where over 5,000 people developed a socially efficient and sophisticated village. I believe there’s a movie about it.
    Survival was possible within a group, in places that were inaccesible to the authorities, such as mountains.
    Sorry I don’t know that much about Maroons in the US.
