Dietz Hurricane Lantern Review – Urban Survival
How multipurpose is a Dietz no. 80 Hurricane Lantern? Watch and find out. Also known as the “Blizzard”, this is the largest and brightest of the original railroad-style hurricane lanterns, so called because the flame is so well protected that even a hurricane will not blow it out. A while ago Dietz (an American firm) moved all the original tooling to Asia where they continue to make lamps in the same style that first appeared in 1840. The lantern gives off a 12-candlepower light, burns continuously for up to 26 hours without refuelling and goes out automatically if the lantern tips over. Makes a great emergency light, garden lantern, or nostalgic decoration. A lever lifts the glass globe to expose the wick for quick lighting, extinguishing, or trimming. Hunter green with gold trim. Metal and glass construction. 15″ tall, not including the handle. Uses lamp oil or kerosene.

Gerber Gorge vs Cold Steel Spetsnaz Shovel – Urban Survival
Which e-tool is best for a bug out bag? The Gerber Gorge or Cold Steel Spetsnaz shovel? Weight, durability, dependability and ergonomics considered, the Cold Steel Special Forces shovel is the clear choice for me. It’s sturdy and versatile and is a perfect addition to a bug out system, or even for weekend campers. The Special Forces Shovel is modeled after the original Soviet Spetznaz shovel. The Spetznaz soldiers made up the most elite unit in the Soviet Army. The US equivalent would be our Green Berets. The shovel head and socket are forged from medium carbon steel, then heat treated for maximum strength. The edges come sharpened to a utility/axe edge that can easily be improved to razor sharpness. The Special Forces Shovel comes complete with a specially made cordura sheath. The sheath features an extra wide belt loop. The sheath and the shovel are available for sale as a stand alone items.

Portable Power Station – Urban Survival
What would you do for light if the grid went down? I put some components together and created an emergency lighting solution. The wind generator is a 10W vawt, and the solar panels are 1.8W each. They trickle charge a 12V battery that can be used for emergency lighting or recharging batteries, cell phones, etc. I’ve used this system and it works. VAWTs (vertical axis wind turbine) work well in a surburban and urban environment. They have lower cut in speeds than horizontal props, which means they’re creating electricity even in low winds. Plus, they run silent so they won’t bother neighbours. I made this after reading Patriots by James Rawles.

Rural & Urban Living – Survivalism
A brief comparison of rural and urban living based on my own experience. I will continue to be loud as silence does not make change nor does silence offer a glimpse of the other side of the coin. Unfortunately when a person who has lived here in Newfoundland all their life attempts to convey their message it is often dismissed as biased. Being a person who has lived both urban and rural lifestyles I am neither biased or prejudiced. This is how it is.

Can anyone recommend a detailed urban survival manual that offers suggestions, advice and techniques?
I am looking for a book similar to the US Army’s Survival Manual. However, the Army’s survival guide does not have a section on urban survival. I live in a major city and want to get information on where to get water, food and shelter in the event I run out of supplies in a war, financial collapse, governmental take-over or natural disaster. I like the book “Steal This Book,” but the information in it is very outdated from the 1970s. Anyone know of some comparable books? Thanks.
