Even When Financial Giants Topple You Can Survive The Financial Crisis

June 5th, 2010

While universally known financial giants continue to smash on the deck with resounding thumps, the financial world reels in mayhem. Scenes of perplexity and lack of self-confidence not seen since the Great Depression in the early 1930’s, nightly fill our television screens. This is not the point in time to panic and let your emotions to take over control.

So What are the Real Facts?

· The giants of the finance world that have been brought to their knees, through over-borrowing and being unable to pay it back. They might be weeping in their caviar, but when 18 billion becomes just only 3 billion, who is counting, except the filthy rich?

· Many ‘average’ business owners are cringing under their bed covers quivering in fear.

The present circumstances have been likened to economic Darwinism, where it is the survival of the fittest. You can either let yourself drown in doom and gloom, or think survival. You have a choice.

The major key to survival is how you manage your money. Okay, that sounds like the same old stuff, but in this new regime you need to rethink everything. You can survive the financial crisis, but it may be necessary to make a few changes along the way.

· First and foremost, Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 <!– /* Style Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {mso-style-parent:”"; margin:0cm; margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:”Times New Roman”; mso-fareast-font-family:”Times New Roman”;} @page Section1 {size:612.0pt 792.0pt; margin:72.0pt 90.0pt 72.0pt 90.0pt; mso-header-margin:36.0pt; mso-footer-margin:36.0pt; mso-paper-source:0;} div.Section1 {page:Section1;} –> /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:”Table Normal”; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:”"; mso-padding-alt:0cm 5.4pt 0cm 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0cm; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:”Times New Roman”;} do not panic. Don’t react to the situation and don’t let your emotions rule you. Work this one from the head, not the heart.

· Secondly, you need to urgently assess the universal situation for yourself, not simply accepting everything the media hype is pushing at you. They will report the stories the way that sells copy. Remember they are the experts in Bad News. Do your own research.

· Globally we have become a consumer society on a grand scale, so take a long hard, unbiased look at your personal circumstances and re-evaluate coldly and calculatingly. Cut down on expenses wherever you can. Streamline where you can for more efficiency and less wastage. Spend money wisely and save it wherever you can.

It is time to break the wants list away from the needs lists. Don’t give up on your dreams, but they are something you have to work into.

Every day you are inundated with a thousand and one different methods to spend your hard earned cash as quickly as possible, particularly if it involves anything to do with credit – where only the banks win! It’s time to realize that credit is a product the same as any other form of goods or services. It is constantly being sold to you.

Yes, in many areas people are losing jobs, but that can happen in any economical state. Be prepared to diversify. So what if you have done the same job for the last hundred years? You have other talents, some you are not even aware of. Adjustment is the real key to your survival. Search for new areas you could break into. Seek out what areas are still forging ahead.

When reporting from the World Knowledge Forum in Seoul, South Korea, marketing professor, Jean-Claude Larréché said “It’s not the creative entrepreneurs but the large companies that are being challenged. Creative companies will survive in any condition”.

“An enormous amount of opportunities”, said Sir Richard Branson, “Will begin to emerge as a result of the current world economic down turn, but companies need to be nimble in order to move quickly and decisively to realize these opportunities”.

This is not the time to creep away in fear, or try burying your head in the sand and expect it to all go away. This is a time to take optimistic action. Find out what your options are, plan carefully and step forward boldly. When things get tough, the tough get going.

Survive Or Thrive?

June 4th, 2010

In this current economic crisis many people are just trying to survive. That’s a common statement these days. But others don’t see it as a crisis at all. They are those who have decided to thrive.

Whether you “survive” or “thrive” has a lot to do with your mindset. What are willing to accept? What are you willing to reject? Your personal beliefs will determine the actions that you take.

For example, if you truly believe that jobs are scarce and that no one is spending any money then you will do whatever you can to just survive. On the other hand, if you are aware that people are producing goods that people are indeed buying, then you headed in the right path to thrive.

Thrive in this economy? With all that is going on in this economy, how can one talk about thriving?

There are plenty of positive stories of people who are thriving today. But because people want to hear all the negative news, many times most people don’t even hear about these inspiring stories.

Apple allows 3rd party developers to submit applications for their iPhones. If you have an iPhone then you can go to their online store and download one of these “apps” as they are called.

Apple reports that last year they sold 8 million iPhones, not counting the popular iPod touch players. How many “apps” have been downloaded? They say over 100 million downloads so far.

So, it’s no secret why people want to develop apps. Steve Demeter made a game called Trism. It’s not an original game; it’s not a complicated game; but it’s an original iPhone app. The Trism download regularly sells for $5. Steve keeps 70% and the rest goes to Apple. It has been reported that Steve managed to earn around $250,000 in two months.

Now here’s my point. People are spending money. But if your mindset is focused on all the negative news of gloom and doom, then you have already decided that you just want to survive.

Almost everyone knows that new car sales have plunged. That means that more and more people are spending money to keep their current vehicles running. Auto service and repair shop business is growing, as is auto parts stores.

I read a report that amusement parks are thriving. Those who live within reasonable driving distance are taking their vacation at the parks, instead of extended destinations. Because of the value of the dollar, people are traveling from abroad to places like Disneyland.

There are people are spending money.

So, what about you? Are you planning on just surviving, or do you want to thrive? The answer to that question lies in your own thoughts. I haven’t talked to him, but I doubt very seriously if Steve Demeter just accepted all the negative news. While working at Wells Fargo, Steve decided to thrive.

How many people do you run into every single day who moan and complain about our current economic situation? They talk about how horrible it is and who is to blame. Many are looking for someone, for anyone, to fix it and make everything all better again.

That kind of attitude is pretty widespread. It reminds me so much of the book called, Who Moved My Cheese? If you haven’t read it, I would highly recommend that you get a copy and read it. It will help you to change your mindset from “survive” to “thrive.”

God talks about thriving all through the Bible. I have been reading and studying the Scriptures for years and I have never once seen a disclaimer for any of His promises that said something like, “Certain rules and restrictions apply – not available in all states or during an economic down turn.”

I have not seen anything like that at all. Have you? In fact, I have seen just the opposite. There are accounts of people prospering in some of the worst of situations.

Now I am aware that God’s promises do not happen automatically. Some people look at some of the great things in the Bible that God said that He would do and then just say, “Well that is great! Okay, God, do Your thing.” It doesn’t work that way.

Yes, God is more than willing and very able to do all that He said He would do. Yes, He does have a great desire to bring His promises into reality for His people. But it is not automatic. We must do our part.

We must accept what He said as true.

We must believe that He is able and willing.

We must have confidence that He will do it for us, not because we are good enough, but because He loves us.

We must trust that He will indeed bring it to pass.

We must take action, not just wait for something to happen.

Going to God in prayer with an attitude of trust and confidence will bring His promises into your life so that you can thrive! But, if on the other hand you just accept all the negatives, then the best you can hope for is to just survive. Which will you choose? Will you take action on God’s promises? Will you thrive?

How Plants Survive Winter

June 3rd, 2010

It’s cold—the plants in the greenhouse are thriving-their glossy leaves in stark contrast to the view beyond the glass. Outside, brown and gray bare stems and drooping evergreen leaves are rimmed in ice. Have you ever wondered-what mechanisms make those outdoor plants survive beyond the greenhouse walls? And why is one plant designated a Zone 7 and another a Zone 3?

I checked out these questions and learned that one of the main factors for cold survival is how plants handle water. Then I called Ross Penhallagon, at the Oregon State University Extension Service office. He confirmed what I had discovered.

Ross told me that the first aspect of cold survival is acclimation. Plants do best when they get several weeks of exposure to near-freezing temperatures before a frost. This signals them to prepare.

  Dry Strategies Work

One preparation method? Plants purposely put themselves in a state of desiccation. They remove excess water from their leaves-in the case of evergreens like rhododendrons and conifers-or from buds and stems. It’s similar to draining exposed pipes so that ice won’t expand and burst them. In plants, the forming ice plays havoc with unprotected cellular structures-why tomato vines are mush after a first frost.

But tougher vegetation evolved in colder climates has adapted. Some savvy plants move water from within their cells to between the cells, where there is more room for expansion. All excess water goes from the roots into the surrounding soil. What’s left behind has higher concentrations of sugars that act like antifreeze. Colder zone plants produce more of this antifreeze protection. Conifers have quite a bit. Greenhouse tropicals have none.

  How Gardeners Can Help

When plants are in this self-induced dry state, protection from wind can be a plus. However, it’s common gardening advice to water plants well before a frost. Maybe that’s true in parts of the country where freezes are seldom expected—orange groves are watered overhead so forming ice protects the plants from lower than 32 degree temperatures. But unless the ground is bone dry, Ross confirmed for me that watering the soil before a frost may do more harm than good. After all, the plants are doing their best to get rid of water, right?

So when you’re in your cozy greenhouse, raise your watering can in salute to those denizens beyond the glass that display nifty strategies to survive the cold.

Study Children To Survive

May 16th, 2010

Different governmental and non-governmental research centers conduct studies regarding environment, technology, mass media affects on children’s behavior, health, attitudes and self- development. Unfortunately, most of them have discovered much more damage than benefit from adults’ efforts to improve their living.

Air pollution affects children’s health much more than adults because children are more vulnerable physically and they spend more time outdoors. More and more polluted air will definitely bring the times when our future generations walk out with air condition controllers and respirators to breathe.

Rapid industrial sourcing of raw materials are exhausting the Earth with so fast volumes that within a hundred of years (our grandchildren and great-grandchildren era) will eat plastic food or return to the primitive society due to lack of materials to build, knit, weld, grow etc. The question of natural resources saving has been discussed for a few decades, but our children would not appreciate us much for these discussions memories.

One of the most powerful sources which affect children’s behavior and attitudes is technology. Technological advancements make our life rapid, reasonable and non-emotional. We can do more jobs, study more subjects, access more places and spend less time with our children. More and more children feel abandoned, unneeded and undesired. Their parents do not have enough time to express their love and devotion. The children who follow their parents as the major leaders in unknown world of adults does not have love a as subject in their study program. They do not know that love is the only feeling which can teach how to make friends, create a family and bear children. Technology indeed has a great future – the future without humans.

Self-development is the last but not least aspect greatly affected by modern world. The most affective attempts are made by mass media. TV might be the leader in children’s personal development because they spend 80% of their free time sitting in front of their TVs. Now, sit still and think of how many modern movie masterpieces you can remember which make their viewers think? The answer is evident: just a few! Profitable and short-time consuming world of action movies make their viewers (mostly children) simply sit and view amazing monsters, meaningless phrases and bloody battles. Thinking is not amazing? No, it is great because it can imagine and create all these wonderful lands! If our children would not think they could not give future to their world and their lives because ‘If I think, then I live.’

Outdoor Furniture Helps You Survive in the Wilderness

May 14th, 2010

Even in an age where it seems that we have every conceivable convenience, people are constantly working to bring us more. No matter how many choices we already have, in everything from pet food, to outdoor furniture, to automobiles, and beyond, there’s always someone, somewhere, getting ready to offer us another great option.
Of course, this kind of thing has been going on since humans first appeared on the scene; that’s how we got to this point. The only difference is that, back then, it was a necessity. After all, when people were out in the middle of nowhere, struggling to survive, and having to somehow find shelter and food on their own, there was nothing else to do except to start inventing things.
These days, the closest we get to that situation is when we go camping, and even then, it’s really nowhere near the same thing, as that, too, has gone upscale. Many people drive luxury campers and mobile homes to parks, where they settle into a community of other people with similar vehicles, and they all “rough it” together.
Certainly, there are still those who prefer to camp in the woods; but they can bring all of the necessities with them, including tents that practically put themselves up. Sure, a lot of people do enjoy fishing and cooking the catch of the day for dinner, but many times, it’s on a portable grill, instead of over an open fire. Furthermore, they have it with the side dishes that they brought from home, along with a bottle of wine, and top it off with dessert.
Moreover, because the world has gone chiefly wireless, many spend the evenings just as they do at home, watching DVD’s, surfing the Internet, or chatting on the phone, instead of singing or telling ghost stories around the campfire (a lost art).
Indeed, it’s interesting to see how far things have progressed, and how they continue to advance. It’s especially fascinating when you consider certain things that seemed to have remained basically the same for years, then suddenly exploded with new varieties. Outdoor furniture is among the leaders in that category. As far back as many of us can remember, our only choices were cheap aluminum folding chairs with woven plastic backs and seats, splintery wooden porch swings, and rusty, squeaky gliders with uncomfortable plastic-covered cushions.
Fortunately, there have been several stunning improvements over the past several years, especially at CedarStore.com, where they’re always working to bring you more great options. Along with classic cedar, pine, oak, cherry, and teak, you’ll find beautiful aluminum, polywood, and vinyl furniture, that’s nearly indestructible. Best of all, there are dozens of comfortable folding chairs, lounges, hammocks, and hammock chairs, that are perfect for taking along on camping trips (to make living in the wilderness even cushier).

So,when your ready to furnish your outdoor rooms, just visit one of the largest outdoor furniture stores at.

School Survival – 10 Steps to Survive a Disaster

May 4th, 2010

If you are an educational professional and a crisis such as a fire, earthquake or tornado strikes, your instant consideration must be school survival.

Although the chances of such events occurring are extremely rare you must be educated and know what to do. Accordingly, below are 10 points you should be aware of which will keep your students safe during a disaster.

The tips below were based on a class of 30 kids. Be sure to adjust amounts given accordingly to fit your particular classroom.  It is wise to stock school survival equipment in an enclosed container or if able, a camping type toilet.  School survival supplies must be kept hidden in a safe place such as a janitor’s closet or teacher’s lounge.

1. Be sure that you are prepared with an adequate supply of food. You should keep at least four – 2400 calorie food bars for each child. This food should provide every person with enough energy to help them endure a classroom lockdown situation.  Be certain to purchase food bars that have a five year shelf duration. It is also a good idea to keep some sweets which can help the kids take their minds towards something enjoyable.

2. A sufficient, safe water reserve is vital, so be sure that each child has a water pouch in addition to water purification tablets in the event the rescue takes longer to arrive.

3. You will need a whistle of some type. Even though it is a very basic piece of equipment, it can save your life. If your classroom is cut off from the rest of the school, a mere signaling tool can get the attention of emergency personnel who are trying to locate your group.

4. Be sure to include a radio/flashlight and also a flashing light which could be used to alert assistance.  An emergency bright stick is an excellent example. The AM/FM tuner will provide a welcome distraction but it can keep you informed on directions and rescue information which could save your life.

5. You should always store plenty of sanitation supplies. Important things to store close-by include toilet tissue rolls and hygiene supplies. Also, keep chemical bags which can dispose of human waste. Making sure your safe area is disease and bacteria-free is incredibly important. You can see why it is a good idea to have a portable toilet which can also become a storage container.

6. For your hygiene needs, include some wet naps and a couple of small containers of hand sanitizer. A few air fresheners will not take up much room and will make life a little more bearable in these conditions.

7. A wilderness first aid kit is a must-have and will come in handy during a disaster if you get the best one.  It must be large enough for all of your children.

8. The AM/FM radio was brought up before as an entertainment device but I would also advise including a couple of packs of playing cards and games for children. It is much better if everyone is kept occupied instead of worrying about the negative.

9. Be sure that there are at least 2 people awake at all times to hear emergency workers who are attempting to make contact or for other signs.

10. As the teacher, school survival depends a great deal on how you react, so remain composed under all circumstances and this model will calm your class.

School survival bags are vital to have available at all times.  Being equipped as a teacher or school administrator is the main factor in safeguarding the lives of the ones we love the most.

If you would like to find out additional information about school survival or purchase complete kits filled with everything a classroom of thirty (30) kids may need for a classroom lockdown emergency, please visit www.SurvivalGearFirst.com.

Are You Ready to Survive a Disaster?

April 16th, 2010

A disaster can strike in seconds sometimes with no warning what so ever and leave whole communities without power, running water or even shelter. You must be prepared to survive. The best way to prepare yourself is to have the necessary equipment and supplies to ensure you and your family are provided with the necessities of life.

Survival equipment is really a form of life insurance. You never know when a disaster will strike and you need to be prepared before not after such an event. You should also try to ensure your neighbors; family and friends are prepared with their own survival gear otherwise be prepared to share yours. If others won’t take their survival needs seriously then buy them kits for Christmas, birthdays and even wedding presents.

Your survival kit should contain at the very least matches, fish hooks, fishing line, a string saw, a small knife, bouillon cube type

dehydrated soup stock, sugar, salt, antibiotics, antiseptics, aspirin, bandages, aluminum foil, a magnetic compass, a small mirror, a magnifying glass, and antihistamine. In a larger kit, you will need food and fresh water to survive at least for two weeks. Avoid foods that have to be cooked unless you have a portable cooker or barbecue.

In the case of floods or earthquakes your home may be destroyed or unsafe to live in so you will need shelter and warmth. Waterproof backpacking tarps can be tied to trees with rope and used as a shelter. For clothing, remember that wool insulates when wet and comfortable waterproof footwear is worth its weight in gold.

You need to know how to use your survival equipment, experience in the use of emergency survival gear will help you to choose what to include in your emergency survival gear kit. You should know some first aid basics and have a copy of a first aid manual.

As well as knowing how to use your survival gear everyone in your house must know where it is. You should keep an inventory along with use by dates and replace items as they become aged or pass their use by date. Store and record the date on items to indicate when it should be replaced or buy extra food when you can and rotate items.

You need to take a survival kit everywhere you go. In your car you should have a portable kit that contains some high energy foods, Sports bars, hard candy, MREs (meals, ready to eat), tropical chocolate bars, beef jerky, and nuts all work well. Basic first aid items, a flashlight and spare batteries as well as a map of the area. A couple bottles of fresh drinking water are must have items.

In some countries it is law to have a survival kit. Even in those countries where it isn’t you still need to be prepared. A good

survival kit will only set you back a few hundred dollars and this is a cost you’ll be happy you paid if one day that disaster strikes and you kit saves the life of a loved family member.

Learning to survive doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom. In fact it can be an interesting family activity that all can participate in.

Even very young members of the family need to be survival aware because if anything happens to their caregivers they may be left to fend for themselves. Don’t leave it till its too late get prepared to survive now.

Christine Brockman is a keen advocate of people being able to survive a disaster, its a moral obligation to ensure your family is prepared to survive. Don’t put it off any longer find out what you need to know about putting together your ownSurvival kit. Increase your chances of being able to survive any disaster with the correct survival gear. For warned is for prepared.
