We Will Survive

July 13th, 2010

It seems as though he WORLD is prophetically hearing what the Spirit is saying while he church and other religious entities are growing more deaf or seemingly unable to HEAR what the Spirit is saying- the Consciousness that we are, that I AM. I’m not saying those who are hearing are understanding, but we, someone surely should be.

Whether knowingly or not, the Obama campaign heard what is resonating with mankind all over the world. It’s time for CHANGE! Who knows what that exactly means? For Obama, it’s a political phrase; however, it is far more than that. A major change in consciousness (substitute the word “spirit” if that helps you). The old time religion no longer works! I’m not surer that “religion” ever worked but it was a vehicle on which spiritual things were to hopefully be carried.

It’s the SPIRIT (consciousness) that we ARE that people truly need!

And then there’s the Gloria Gaynor song, sung in the first person, but crring the message to all, ” I Will Survive”. In case R&B or Motown hasn’t been in your journey, here are a few of the lyrics-

First I was afraid, then I was petrified
Kept thinking I could never live
But, I will survive I’ve got all my life to live
I’ve got all my love to give and I’ll survive

It took all the strength I had, not to fall apart
kept trying hard to mend the pieces of my broken heart
and I spent oh so many nights, just feeling sorry for myself
Now I hold my head up high and you see me somebody new
I’m not that chained up little person.

We’re in bondage and don’t know it- the worst kind. It’s like deception, but the worst sort is self-deception. There is MORE to life than this physical life. Voltaire said, “It is no more surprising to be born twice than to be born once.” Can you dig it? (I say that on this day that we lost Isaac Hayes). Robert Alexander, PhD of Philosophy at Georgia State University said, ” We now have, for the first time in the history of our species, compelling empirical evidence for belief in some form of personal survival after death.”

Unfortunately religion has been majoring on the promises of an after life when the need to having been “born again” in this life, surviving in this life, and most of all prospering in “this life” should be the emphasis.

Yes, we WILL SURVIVE (the here and now), but HOW?

As a spiritual-futurist my commentaries and articles deal primarily with an interpretation of current events in light of macro-universal forces at play.

Ten Ways to Survive the Coming Recession

July 12th, 2010

Please feel free to use this article as long as credit is given to the resource box.
© Copyright Arthur Levine, 2008
Words: 471
Keywords: Recession, Survive, Prevent, Debt Control

We can’t prevent a recession from happening, but there are a number of things to do so that we survive it with a minimum of pain.

1. Have the proper attitude – you have to have faith that you can do something positive if you are going to survive the coming recession.
2. Have faith in yourself – you have to believe in your own abilities if you want to be successful at surviving a recession.
3. Don’t panic – this is not the time to start selling the investments in your 401K. We are probably closer to the bottom than the top and you don’t want to create a tax liability for yourself.
4. Think long term – You are probably going to recover most of what you have lost if not all when the recession is over. Historically things get better over time.
5. Reduce Your Expenses – Sit down and make a budget. Try and decide what expenses you can reduce if you lose your job and you need to make limited resources do.
6. Decide what’s Important – Do you know what is really important to you? Is it your home, your car, your medicines, or your life style? Something is going to have to be cut.
7. Alternate Income source – If you want to survive this recession you may need an extra source of income. Examine your talents. What kind of part time work are you good at? A second income is better than none.
8. Marshall your assets – Are you sitting around holding onto antiques or jewelry or other unused assets that you don’t like or need? Sell them and build a nest egg to give you more security in these trying times.
9. Your family – If you are really experiencing trying times it is okay to ask relatives for a loan to help get you through them as long as you intend to pay it back. Worst case you can move in with your relatives or if you are doing okay have them move in with you.
10. Debt Control – Talk to your lenders, your mortgage holders, your credit card company. They can help you spread out or defer your payments so that you both recover from these trying times.

It’s really up to you. You can survive this recession if you believe that you can. This is not the end of the world. It is only a stage in your life that you are going through. So are the rest of us. We all have to learn to cope.

How to Survive Winter in the Sunshine State: Tips for Weatherproofing your Home

July 11th, 2010

Yes, Virginia, it actually gets cold in Florida!

Before I moved to the Tampa Bay, I had no idea that the weather ever dropped to a point where I, born and raised in snowy cold freezing temperatures of the north, would ever succumb to wearing so much as a sweater in Florida. I saw people passing by in their coats and scarves and I was astounded. There was no snow! How could they be so cold?

I quickly learned that temperatures in Florida do drop in the winter! They can even reach freezing. And suddenly, I actually reach for a sweater – I even layer my clothes! I wonder if my blood has thinned, making me more susceptible to the cooler days or is there actually something to wet cold versus dry cold (as what I am used to)? My grandmother grew up in a humid climate and always told me that it’s as if the moisture goes right into your bones. A little research tells us that humidity conducts heat away from the body during cooler weather (and conversely, conducts heat to the body during warm weather). Interestingly, it has been stated that 53°F is the magical number where humidity will make the temperature seem colder or warmer depending on whether the temperature is higher or lower than this number.

So now that the days are actually starting to remain quite chilly and even wet from winter rain, and I can attest to near freezing temperatures in Zephyrhills, Tarpon Springs, Palm Harbor and the like, it is time to weatherproof my home – a metaphorical sweater, if you will, for my property!

Starting indoors, the first thing to do is inspect rooms for cracks and leaks. Fill any cracks or open areas (like around your dryer vent) with appropriate filler like caulk or foam. Check all plumbing for leaks. If you come across a leak, fix it immediately. If needed, consult a professional for help. Next, look for exposed pipes and insulate them. Frozen pipes are usually not a concern for residents of the Florida Gulf as temperatures need to be around 20°F for water to freeze in a pipe and threaten severe water damage. Nonetheless, we all pay heating and cooling bills year round and a well insulated pipe will do wonders for your energy bill.

An often overlooked aspect of weatherproofing your home is attic insulation. As with weatherproofing your pipes, a properly insulated attic can shrink a hefty energy bill. Several energy companies will provide free insulation inspections of your home. Also, there are government programs that exist to help you upgrade the insulation in your home: you pay a portion and the majority of the cost is taken care of by the program. Call your local energy provider today and arrange for an insulation inspection.

In addition to inspecting your plumbing system, exposed pipes, attic and walls for cracks, winter is a good time to have your furnace, fireplace and chimney professionally serviced. A well-maintained system will deliver results efficiently and safely. Further to servicing, before using your fireplace this season, inspect the damper to certify that it opens and closes properly. A beautiful log fire is difficult to enjoy if your home is filled with smoke! On that note, make sure your smoke detector has fresh batteries. It is a good idea to change the batteries twice a year and periodically test your smoke detector.

If you have a gas-log fireplace instead of a traditional wood burning fireplace, be aware that gas-burning appliances in your home give off Carbon Monoxide. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions exactly when using your gas-burning fireplace or any other type of gas-burning appliance. To further protect you and your family, install a carbon monoxide detector and follow the manufacturer’s directions. Finally, if the damper in your chimney has been blocked open to accommodate gas log fumes, a way to alleviate heat loss and prevent drafts is by installing glass doors in front of your fireplace. Please note that doors may remain closed when the fireplace is not in use but must remain open during use.

Even though Florida does not fall victim to snow and ice, there are a few things you can do to weatherproof the outside of your home as well. Winter is a great time to have your trees trimmed and dead trees removed by a professional service. Check gutters for dead leaves and clean them out. Clogged gutters possess a substantial threat for water damage to your home as they will redirect water into your house though the walls and ceiling. If you have any wood outside, like a patio or any furniture, apply a protecting sealant to help prevent water damage and rot. Also, prevent heat loss within your home by checking for any holes in the exterior walls that need filling. If you come across any existing water damage, consult with a restoration company immediately.

A wonderful thing about living in Florida is the ability to enjoy foliage most of the year. However, there are some plants that while they thrive in the moist hot weather most of the year, are extremely susceptible to lower temperature. The best thing to do is to move potted plants inside. If they are too large to bring in, move them closer to your home for added protection or cover them. Many of the tropical trees that we grow in places like St. Petersburg and Sarasota, especially the palm trees, cannot tolerate even a frost. Check with your local nursery for expert advice.

A final word of advice: winterize your pool. Most people prefer to hire a professional when it comes to weatherproofing a pool or outdoor hot tub. From balancing alkalinity to ensuring the water simply will not freeze to keeping the area free of debris, the process can be time consuming and somewhat complex. .Whatever your preference, protecting your pool or spa is an important step that should not be overlooked when weatherproofing your home.

With your home completely weatherproofed inside and out, it is now time to settle in and enjoy the coziness of your home. Sit back, enjoy a cup of hot cider and relax by the fire.

Disasters assault you at the most unexpected moments. They arrive without warning, leave the victims comfortless and lives shattered. There is no second chance in the midst of disaster, just total devastation.

Whether it is death, divorce, illness, fires, or acts of terrorism, the agony that is cause has a common aspect. It hurts!! So how do we survive so much pain?

In the initial stages you are overpowered by the anesthetizing state of shock and utter disbelief, where the fullness of the reality is unable to register. This is the body’s way of coping. If the fullness hit home immediately, no one would survive!

Then comes the roller coaster ride of a concoction of disbelief, anger, guilt and a whole range of sentiments, which has your world spiraling like a runaway jet.

This is the time you need you need to give yourself some small breathing space to attend to your wounds and wait for a small ray of the healing process to commence, through an unhindered expression of your grief. For even though you don’t believe it now, over time you will heal. The fact is life will continue and you will have no choice but to keep on going for where there is life there is hope. Yes, you may have lost an entire way of life, a loved one, or good friends, but you are still living. Your heart is still pumping and your body demands you take care of it.

Time and again disasters have proven to be periods of opportunity. Opportunity that shows up the community spirit, as has been seen by the response to the catastrophic bush fires that have desolated the southern part of Australia. Opportunities for the humblest individual in society to become a champion. Opportunities for people to extend a helping hand to others they have never even met. Opportunities to reveal a true expression of empathy towards the sufferers. Opportunities to let others reach out to you. Being of use to others is often the best and most healing road you can choose, even if it is only in the way of giving a comforting shoulder for someone to cry on.

It is often in times of disasters, you come face to face with your fears, in living three-d. Fears that plague you in the still small hours of the morning, when life is at its lowest point. Nightmares that are finally brought out into the open. However, you will usually find the reality easier to cope with that the haunting fears of \”What if..?\’\’

Disasters bring you to the realization that life is unpredictable and you are forced to deal with situations you did not anticipate. Disasters that turn you into refugees. People who must fashion a different way of life. People who know what it is to lose everything. No matter what you feel like, you simply can’t lie down and die when disaster disintegrates your life.

It is not an option to sit and indulge in a self-pity party. Feeling sorry for yourself hurts only you. Disasters are the time when you need to reach deep inside yourself, to reveal strengths you never imagined you had.

The key to surviving is that you have to become a realist and an optimist at the same time, as life-destroying circumstances change you forever. You will come out the other side a different person.

Disaster divides your life into before and after the tragedy. You will never look at even the simple things of life in the same way. Yet, the end of one thing is always the beginning of another, for it has been proven that human nature will rise, just as out of the ashes the phantom phoenix rises anew.

How then are you to live through the grief of disaster? You look back and learn the lessons from the past, but more importantly you look forward and take one small step. The tallest mountains in the world were conquered one tiny step at a time. You can do it too. You can take the next step, no matter how painful. Let the future and the big things take care of themselves. Just make the decision to survive through today.

Innkeepers Narrowly Survive a Scary Situation

July 8th, 2010

Jeff had grown up in Woodstock, New Hampshire, where his parents owned a decent sized Bed and Breakfast. The old homestead had more than ten rooms and could accommodate 16 people at a time. It was a well regarded establishment that had customers return year after year for the many tourist seasons that the White Mountains had to offer. The Bed and Breakfast sat atop a hill and had a stunning view southward of the White Mountain section of the Appalachian Mountain range. The best seasons of the year were summer, fall, and winter with the numerous outdoor activities that the area provided.

In the summer there were wonderful hiking opportunities in the lush green mountains that were less than an hour’s trip. The mountains were older and relatively smaller, compared to the western Rockies, and thus hiking was easy and available for people of all ages. The trails were both well travelled and well maintained, and made for days of new discoveries to be found such as rivers and waterfalls. In the fall the leaves changed to brilliant colors and although the temperatures were cooler, it was still reasonably warm enough to do some nature exploring, or take the cog railway to the top of Mount Washington. The winter was time for skiing, and there were plenty of mountains within a short driving distance.

Jeff inherited the business when his parents passed away and he did a fine job managing the business. He also had in the downstairs part that added additional business. With so much money going through the place on a regular basis, he should have installed a home security system no matter how safe he thought the area might be. It was a precaution he should have taken, especially when he was responsible for other people on a regular basis.

The building was up to state code for everything in terms of fire and safety. The monthly gas and oil bills were huge because of all the fuel that was used for cooking and heating the place. The water heater was massive because Jeff needed to have an ample supply to keep the shower hot for all the customers, especially in the winter months.  So far he had not had any complaints ever about a cold shower.

One day in the spring he came home from running some errands when he found his wife Jen in a strange mood. When he found her she had fallen asleep sitting at the kitchen table and he revived her with a little difficulty. She said she was incredibly dizzy and her memory was foggy. He suddenly began to feel very woozy himself and they decided to get out of the house. The fresh air revived him and he called the authorities explaining his situation. The ambulance and fire department rushed to the bed and breakfast and the EMT’s diagnosed the problem as carbon monoxide poisoning.  The deadly situation could have been avoided with a home security system that came with a carbon monoxide detector.

They were very lucky that Jen was safe and Jeff had returned home in time. They were also very lucky that no guests had been in the building because that could have been very bad. Jeff reconsidered the security system and immediately knew it was the best choice. He had been lucky one time, but with other people’s lives on the line he could not afford the risk and he had a security system installed later that week. The system came complete with not only burglar protection but also smoke, fire, and carbon monoxide protection.

<a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview(‘/outgoing/article_exit_link’);” href=”http://www.securitychoice.com/”>adt home security</a> will help assist you with more than just burglars if you are the proprietor of a small in or family run bed and breakfast. <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview(‘/outgoing/article_exit_link’);” href=”http://www.securitychoice.com/adt-wireless-home-security-system.html”>adt alarm system</a> can also alert you of serious or deadly health threats such as carbon monoxide.

How to Survive a Plateau!

June 28th, 2010

Plateaus can be most frustrating! There you are, making the correct food choices, moving and exercising, staying positive… and the scale won’t move! Learning why they exist can help you understand the science behind the plateau. In addition, we’ll provide you with information to help you stay on track while weathering the difficulties of a plateau.

What is a Plateau?

A plateau is the body’s natural defense against starvation. In all reality, it is a marvelous protective mechanism and, in time of famine, would help preserve your life. If we can learn to appreciate “what” a plateau is, then we can begin to view it as a benefit to our overall survival and not as such a dreaded enemy.

What Can You Do to Help Get Over a Plateau?

There are both physical and emotional components that are needed to survive a plateau.

Physically, you need to double-check your food intake to make sure you’re not exceeding the calories needed to lose weight. Sometimes, we tend to begin eating a little more and push the calories up enough to maintain our weight rather than continuing to lose. Other times, as Ana calls it, we indulge in BLT’s (bites, licks and tastes). What we consider to be “little” indulgences, can actually add up to more than a 1,000 additional calories.

To be sure you are physically on track, you may find it useful to journal your food intake. Write down EVERYTHING you eat and the associated calories. CalorieKing is a site I have found quite useful; there are others. This site shows the calorie content, the nutritional values and serving sizes of common food items. In addition, the same information is available for many items featured at national restaurants and fast food chains.

If you are exceeding the caloric intake necessary to lose weight, adjust your food plan and reach out for additional support.

If you are physically remaining at a calorie content that will allow weight loss, then try the following activities to jump-start your metabolism.

Activity #1

Days 1 and 2 – Lower your normal caloric intake by 200 calories (example: if your daily caloric intake is 1,400 calories, lower your calorie intake to 1,200).

Day 3 – Increase your normal caloric intake by 200 calories (example: if your daily caloric intake is 1,400 calories, increase your calorie intake to 1,600). By consuming the additional calories, it sends a message to your brain that you are not starving. It signals your body to release the fat it has been holding in reserve.

Day 4 – Return to your normal caloric intake (example: if your daily caloric intake is 1,400 calories, return your calorie intake to 1,400).

Activity #2

Change your exercise routine from day to day. This keeps your muscles in a state of confusion. In this state, your body does not know what to expect and your muscles stand ready to accept the physical challenges you present. This allows your body to achieve the maximum benefit from your exercise.

You see, our bodies have a remarkable way of adapting to changes in our environment and physical activity levels. If you continue to do the same exercise routine, day after day, your body becomes accustomed to it and knows what to expect… it adapts. In doing so, it no longer requires the same amount of energy to perform a task it is becoming accustomed to. While your effort remains constant, your body has adapted and now uses less energy to perform the same function. It really is remarkable and part of the grand design that assures our survival as a species, albeit frustrating when trying to lose weight.

Emotionally, a plateau can present challenges. You begin to doubt yourself and your efforts and start questioning whether you should just give up.

Is this really what you want? Do you want to give up on YOU and the progress you’ve made? Do not allow failure to be an option!

Rather than looking at this in a negative manner, why not reverse your logic? Why not look at where you’ve come from and celebrate your success? Why not celebrate the fact that you are determined and strong and that you are not gaining? Why not reinforce the knowledge that your body will give way to your efforts of healthy eating and exercise once it realizes you are safe and your survival is not threatened?

Attitude is Everything! Here is a story that was recently shared by my friend.

There once was a woman who woke up one morning, looked in the mirror, and noticed she had only three hairs on her head. ‘Well,’ she said, ‘I think I’ll braid my hair today.’ So she did and she had a wonderful day.

The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and saw that she had only two hairs on her head. ‘H-M-M,’ she said, ‘I think I’ll part my hair down the middle today.’ So she did and she had a grand day.

The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed that she had only one hair on her head. ‘Well,’ she said, ‘today I’m going to wear my hair in a pony tail.’ So she did, and she had a fun, fun day.

The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed that there wasn’t a single hair on her head. ‘YAY!’ she exclaimed. ‘I don’t have to fix my hair today!’ Attitude is everything.

How Do You Survive a Plateau?

Understand that the science behind a plateau is the first step to surviving these episodes. Let your brain reinforce this knowledge and calm your fears. You are not failing. You will lose the weight. It will take a little more time and require persistence to continue on your plan when the scale does’t move.

Implement one or both of the activities described above to help shorten the length of time you remain at a plateau.

Accept that a plateau is a normal survival response and not anything you are doing wrong.

Persist in the healthy eating and exercise behaviors that will bring you success.

Maintain a positive attitude. Just as the tortoise won the race in his slow and steady pace, know that you WILL win this race as well!

Reach for the support of friends to uphold you during a plateau. They can provide the encouragement and motivation to see you through a plateau and join in celebrating your success!

A Few Final Thoughts…

“A strong mental attitude is built the same way physical strength is gained- by repetition.” – Unknown

“Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.” – Robert Francis Kennedy

“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; un-rewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan ‘press on’ has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.” Calvin Coolidge

“Success seems to be largely a matter of hanging on after others have let go.” – William Feather

“A man can fail many times, but he isn’t a failure till he gives up.” – Unknown

Stay true to yourself! YOU CAN DO THIS!!! It is our dream no one has a right to prevent us from reaching it, least of all us.

2012 – Basic Tools You Need To Survive 2012

June 27th, 2010

We are talking here about killing devices to hunt and to protect yourself. When the electricity and all current technologies are gone, people will need to use some primitive techniques to survive.

KILLING DEVICES
There are several killing devices that you can construct to help you obtain small game to help you survive.
The rabbit stick, the spear, the bow and arrow, and the sling are such devices.

RABBIT STICK
One of the simplest and most effective killing devices is a stout stick as long as your arm, from fingertip to shoulder, called a “rabbit stick.” You can throw it either overhand or sidearm and with considerable force. It is best thrown so that it flies sideways, increasing the chance of hitting the target. It is very effective against small game that stops and freezes as a defense.

SPEAR
You can make a spear to kill small game and to fish. Jab with the spear; do not throw it.

BOW AND ARROW
You can construct a suitable short-term bow fairly easily. When it loses its spring or breaks, you can replace it.

1. Select a hardwood stick about 1 meter (3 feet) long that is free of knots or limbs. Carefully scrape the large end down until it has the same pull as the small end. Careful examination will show the natural curve of the stick. Always scrape from the side that faces you, or the bow will break the first time you pull it. Dead, dry wood is preferable to green wood.
2. To increase the pull, lash a second bow to the first, front to front, forming an “X” when viewed from the side. Attach the tips of the bows with cordage and only use a bowstring on one bow.
3. Select arrows from the straightest dry sticks available. The arrows should be about half as long as the bow. Scrape each shaft smooth all around. You will probably have to straighten the shaft.
You can bend an arrow straight by heating the shaft over hot coals. Do not allow the shaft to scorch or burn. Hold the shaft straight until it cools. You can make arrowheads from bone, glass, metal, or pieces of rock. You can also sharpen and fire-harden the end of the shaft. Fire hardening is actually a misnomer. To fire-harden wood, hold it over hot coals or plunge it deep under the coals in the ashes, being careful not to burn or scorch the wood. The purpose of fire hardening is to harden the wood by drying the moisture out of it.
4. You must notch the ends of the arrows for the bowstring.
Cut or file the notch; do not split it. Fletching (adding feathers to the notched end of an arrow) improves the arrow’s flight characteristics. Fletching is recommended but not necessary on a field-expedient arrow.

SLING
You can make a sling by tying two pieces of cordage, each about 60 centimeters (24 inches) long, at opposite ends of a palmsized piece of leather or cloth. Place a rock in the cloth and wrap one cord around your middle finger and hold in your palm. Hold the other cord between your forefinger and thumb. To throw the rock, spin the sling several times in a circle and release the cord between your thumb and forefinger. Practice to gain proficiency.
The sling is very effective weapon to survive against small game.

In order to survive the real world after the 2012 events, it is clear that we need to make sure we have those tools to protect ourselves and to hunt for food. Surely this is quite an adaptation for the majority of us, yet not a luxury nor an option if we want to stand a chance.
