October 10th, 2010

I have a 304 stainless steel flat bar and I would like to make a bushcraft knife with it. Is it the same heat process as for 5160 steel and if not Can you advice on how to go about it?
Thanks in advance

Cold Steel Trail Master REVISITED

September 14th, 2010

The Cold Steel Trail Master in SK-5 is my favorite wilderness survival blade for a reason… a few, actually. With it’s excellent blade design and tough steel, remarkable balance and control, and comfortable, insulating handle, it offers performance and reliability in any condition. All that in a very affordable package! It’s my favorite, but it’s not perfect… 9/10

Cold Steel Trail Master – Favorite Large Fixed Blade Survival Knife

August 25th, 2010

***UPDATED – Check out my *REVISITED* video on this knife! *** When it comes to survival and bushcraft capabilities, my favorite knife to employ is the Cold Steel Trail Master in SK-5. It is heavy, but not unwieldy, and very well balanced. The bowie design is modified to keep the tip strong for prying and digging, and allows for solid batoning. The incredible 5/16″ thickness makes this the superlative knife for splitting, as it functions like a chisel. The kraton handle allows for positive grip in all conditions, and will insulate your hand from shock and cold. The only modifications I would make to the knife are to remove the top half of the hilt, and to apply some jimping to the spine of the blade. But other than that, this is really an exceptional wilderness survival blade in all respects. All that and a very economical price. 9/10

Gerber Gorge vs Cold Steel Spetsnaz Shovel – Urban Survival

July 28th, 2010

Which e-tool is best for a bug out bag? The Gerber Gorge or Cold Steel Spetsnaz shovel? Weight, durability, dependability and ergonomics considered, the Cold Steel Special Forces shovel is the clear choice for me. It’s sturdy and versatile and is a perfect addition to a bug out system, or even for weekend campers. The Special Forces Shovel is modeled after the original Soviet Spetznaz shovel. The Spetznaz soldiers made up the most elite unit in the Soviet Army. The US equivalent would be our Green Berets. The shovel head and socket are forged from medium carbon steel, then heat treated for maximum strength. The edges come sharpened to a utility/axe edge that can easily be improved to razor sharpness. The Special Forces Shovel comes complete with a specially made cordura sheath. The sheath features an extra wide belt loop. The sheath and the shovel are available for sale as a stand alone items.
