Why are some people so much into survival and bushcraft skills?

September 24th, 2010

Is it to do with fearing an all out nuclear war or terrorist attack? Are some of them linked to extreme political groups? I have noticed many also like military-style exercises and wear fake uniforms and facemasks, etc.. Or is it just men showing what little boys they really are at heart? Not that some women don’t also enjoy these things but they’re markedly rarer :-)

Hunting And Fishing Is A Way Of Life For Some People

July 10th, 2010

Hunting and fishing is the way many people survive in this world. Rather than going to the local supermarket, many people rely on hunting and fishing to supply them with meat and other nutrients for their bodies.

While some people grew up in families where hunting and fishing was used to supply food for the table, others have found it to be a rewarding experience later in life. Hunting and fishing are also activities that many people choose for recreational purposes.

Deer hunting is the most popular type of hunting in North America. The white tail deer continues to be a great catch, but its challenges often make it nearly impossible to capture. Its wilderness survival far surpasses other deer species because of its extra keen sense of smell as well as sight and sound.

A white tail deer can detect a variety of scents and it also has stronger olfactory senses than many breeds of dogs. Their skittishness also makes them an elusive figure in the woods.

Hunting and fishing is not only a challenge for many people, it gives them a chance to relax and something to focus on besides the usual grind of work and everyday life. Hunting and fishing can be like a vacation in the middle of a weekend or for a few hours after work. It can also give you a chance to be with friends and family who are just as busy as you are.

One challenge that hunting and fishing also provides is the quest for a trophy sized animal or fish. This is one goal that any sportsman secretly, or not so secretly, longs for. Most beginners are glad to catch or take fish or game of any size, but as experience kicks in, the desire to catch something worthy of hanging on the wall intensifies.

Many hunters will begin to pass on animals they could take, in hope that a big one will soon appear. Veteran anglers may begin to get out fished by novices because they refuse to put on the lure that their companions are using to catch anything that will bite. They use big lures designed to catch the attention of big fish that got big by passing on those other lures that the little fish go nuts over.

Hunting and fishing is a pastime for many people in much the same way that baseball is a pastime. As such, outlawing hunting and fishing would only lead to many people changing their way of life.

Whether they go hunting and fishing to supply food for their family or simply as a means of relaxation, it is enjoyed by people who truly understand the importance of it.

Surviving December 21 2012 – Some Practical Steps To Take

May 5th, 2010

How would you survive if the end of the world were to happen on December 21 2012 as many theorists are predicting. If you are one of the lucky survivors what do you do next? You have survived an earth-changing event but now how do you actually live?

Failing to plan is planning to fail. The gift of hindsight. Would have, could have, should have. These are all the clichés that you could be espousing on December 22 2012. It would be wiser to consider possible outcomes should the Doomsday predictions prove to be true. Simple ideas such as packing a survival bag will not cost much. Pregnant women do this simple little task before impending childbirth. So if there is to be a cataclysmic event of biblical proportions to descend upon us would it not be prudent to prepare, just to be on the safe side.

There are organizations that provide Wilderness courses that teach how to live off the land, how to create fire, plant and sew your own harvest. All the things that we take for granted in our every day living have now to be totally forgotten and we need to go back to the very beginning and think about starting all over. Move to a higher altitude and build a dome-shaped living structure. Start your own allotment where you can grow your own fruit and vegetables. Stockpile seeds and plants of all varieties, canned goods, and dried food – think ahead.

It is inevitable that all communications and power sources will be non-existent so invest in gas-fired cooking facilities, heaters etc. Fill your wardrobes with warm clothing to survive the coldest of winters. Blankets, sleeping bags, socks could well be the currency of the future as there will be no financial or banking organizations remaining, which is not necessarily a bad thing based on the current world economic situation.

Fill your shelves with books and board games as it is likely that there will be no TV or radio or internet. A musical instrument or two would not go astray. A well -stocked first aid kit is of extreme importance and again your book supply should back up any requirements that you may foresee. Stockpile potable water supplies and include water purifiers in your inventory. Maps, compass, implements such as shovels, pitchforks all become imperative. Weapons will be necessary as you may revert to being a hunter and gatherer.

in hard times, some flirt with survivalism

February 16th, 2010

from msnbc: Atash Hagmahani is not waiting for the stock market to recover. The former high-tech professional turned urban survivalist has already moved his money into safer investments: Rice and beans, for starters. I hoard food, says Hagmahani, 44, estimating that he has enough to last his family a year or two. Im not ashamed to admit it. media monarchy dot com
