Ray Mears Bushcraft 1 of 3

Ray Mears (born 1964) is a British author and TV presenter on the subject of bushcraft and survival techniques. He grew up in Southern England, and started tracking foxes at a young age. It was his Judo teacher who gave him the idea to learn survival skills. He has been teaching survival skills since 1983, when he founded the “Woodlore” School of Wilderness Bushcraft. His Outdoor Survival Handbook was published in 1990, and his first TV appearance was in 1993 in the BBC2 series Tracks. His presentation style is often praised as authoritative but relaxed and friendly. His love of his subject and his sense of communion with nature are evident in his programmes, as is his respect for indigenous cultures. He has developed something of a cult following amongst students in the United Kingdom. Ray Mears has become synonymous with survival and wilderness bushcraft through his television series Tracks, World of Survival, The Essential Guide to Rocks, and Extreme Survival. He spent his life leaning these skills and is a master of the subject. Wanting to be able to sleep out on the trail and unable to afford camping equipment, he resorted to a Robinson Crusoe approach to solving the problem. Digesting every scrap of information relating to survival that he could find in his local library, he soon began to re-learn skills that had not been employed on the North Downs for hundreds of years. Since those early days Ray has expanded his horizons by travelling the world. He has won the

thats exactly the problem, Bear has alot of experts that show him what to do and bear presents it as if he were the expert himselve on tv, thats a fraud.

So what if it even was true if bear climbed the everest, alot of people have done that but do’nt claim to be the superman bear does.

  2. @happymark1805 ok, like i said, the show is obviously for entertainment purposes, but Bear is not a fake. Can any girlscout climb everest after a broken back? The guy has experience. I’m not ripping on Ray he’s legit in the field but Bear know plenty. Also, Bear’s crew includes a survival expert who Bear learns from constantly, yo’re right, which makes him even better at what he’s doing. He is a young guy. When he is Rays ag lets ee where he is. Bear is much more capable sorry to say

@89Levi1 – any girlscout can read a book or two, have a crew prepare everything and pretend on tv she knows everything, everyone could claim ‘I walked bearfooted to Israel and back’ to make a phony show on tv, cause thats what bear is doing, if you look at Ray you notice that he teaches, Ray does not claim to be this and that, Bear lets people see how things realy are and thats being honnest.

  4. happymark1805 | June 20, 2010 at 9:08 am |

@tylertac – Bear always says things like ‘if it goes wrong they are miles from anywere and can not be saved, they suggest he goes into a cave without knowing were it goes while in fact he knows exactly were it goes and so on, the man is a big fraud, have you seen watch?v=YP0_-7gbXbY, they are not miles from anywere, there is a whole crew nearbye in case anything goes ‘wrong’ all trips are carefully planned and scouted in advance.

  5. @happymark1805 your an idiot, listen to the beginning of every episode, he says that “my camera crew is coming with me”. The show’s premise was probably misleading at first. but that was cleared up a while ago. Grylls is just as good of a surviver as Ray, they both have different methods of survival. Grylls is probably more extreme with more military tactics. Look at his resume, the man is not a fake.

  6. @meatloafzombie what do you mean by fake? Some things on his show probably aren’t made out to be what they seem, but its a tv show and obviously they (the producers) need to up ratings. He does have the training and he does show you ways to survive in the case that everything goes terribly wrong. He may have supervision but he does do the stunts and he does give helpful tips. I think in a world of irresponsible celebrities he is an excellent role model, communicator and motivational speaker.

  7. @happymark1805 ok well making false claims is one thing, so saying “Man Vs. Wild” is phony is ok. However, Bear is not. The guy knows as much as anyone on the topic and probably more

for those who want to see proof about the faker Bear, watch?v=YP0_-7gbXbY

  9. happymark1805 | June 20, 2010 at 12:43 pm |

@89Levi1 – Bear suggests in his shows that he is alone in the ‘wilderness’ while in fact he is not, Bear claims alot of things that are not true, that makes him a liar, and I would not want to get advise from a liar, if you believe him thats your choice, allot of us know the truth about Bear and chose to see a man that is honnest and that is Ray, Ray gives you info that is helpfull.

  10. @happymark1805 yeah, Bear climbing everest and serving in the S.A.S is not experience, it’s all reading books right? you’re an idiot. The guy is not a fake, and the point of the show is not to see if HE CAN SURVIVE, it’s to GIVE SOME ADVICE on the matter….why the hell would anyone go “survive” just for shits? That’s stupid and those who know anything on the matter know Bear could if he had too. Quit these bullshit comments

I live in the bush in Northern British Columbia and I learned some shit from the Crees.Well may be this guy can survive in the European forests but I doubt that he can in the B.C.rainforests

@Roflmaohaxbbq – yeah a ‘deadly’ snake with no teeth LOL, Ray knows what he is talking about thru experience, Bear knows what he red in books, not too long ago there was a documentry made over Bear and his fake series, you see him walking in the wilderness….100 meters away there is a road that his crew uses with their car.

If you have to chose I would go for Ray, and if I had to chose between Bear and a girlscout I would go for the girlscout 😉

  13. Roflmaohaxbbq | June 20, 2010 at 2:07 pm |

@happymark1805 yeah they give him a deadly snake to fight, not give him japanese grinding stones like ray uses

  14. happymark1805 | June 20, 2010 at 2:28 pm |

@Roflmaohaxbbq -Bear uses what his crew put there for him 🙂

  15. happymark1805 | June 20, 2010 at 2:53 pm |

@spuffchops70 – keep the same angle, that takes some practice, and you need a quality blade, and do’nt use too much preassure

  16. spuffchops70 | June 20, 2010 at 3:35 pm |

I have one of those wetstones and I’m not having much joy with sharpening my knife to a razor edge. I think I’m doing it correctly like Ray in this clip. Any bushcrafters out there got any tips?

  17. FuzorDragon480 | June 20, 2010 at 4:32 pm |

    What knife is he using?

  18. MrJules567 | June 20, 2010 at 4:45 pm |

Hey there I’ve written a song dedicated to Bushcraft ace Ray Mears.
Please check it out on my channel if you can spare a moment.

Bear Grylls basically makes jackass in nature. His tips are useless and dangerous, and he only gets good ratings being he literally eats shit and drinks piss.
If you’ll notice, all of Grylls’ fans are kids and teenagers who are easily impressed by stupid stunts. I don’t think I’ve seen any adults even mention him in a serious discussion about survival, hiking or bushcraft. He’s pretty much a joke in the wilderness community.

  20. @Roflmaohaxbbq You have to be joking? Bear Gryll’s stays is fucking hotels rather than sleeping in the wild.

    Ray Mears is the man.

  21. ichnixdeutschkann | June 20, 2010 at 5:50 pm |

bear and ray are different. as you can see ray shows how to sharp a knife…eight minutes long if bear would show how he sharps his knife before his trip it would be the same.
and by the way ray needs much more equipment than bear needs :p

  22. Roflmaohaxbbq | June 20, 2010 at 5:55 pm |

why do so many people think ray is so much better then bear? Ray needs to use all his expensive equiptment to do anything, unlike bear who can use watever is around him

  23. 0DrunkenMonkey0 | June 20, 2010 at 6:09 pm |

its funny because ray teaches sas survival tech.

  24. erroneousapostrophe | June 20, 2010 at 6:20 pm |

In a survival situation and I would chose Ray Mears all the way. I’d knock that fat fuck out and make jerky from his quads and use his belly lard for a candle. I would use Bear’s teachings and Ray’s lard and jerky.

  25. Meketoa101 | June 20, 2010 at 6:52 pm |

@erroneousapostrophe That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard
